In Focus Double Bill with the Adetuyi Brothers

July 27, 2011 filed under Canadian and Cinema Summit

Cinéfest Sudbury is excited to announce a double bill experience like no other featuring films by sibling, Sudbury born filmmakers Alfons and Robert Adetuyi. Both brothers feature films High Chicago (Alfons Adetuyi) and Beat the World (Robert Adetuyi) will be played back to back followed by an in depth, moderated panel discussion.

Beat the World [Robert Adetuyi, Canada, 2011] Three groups of expert dancers are about to converge on Detroit to participate in the "Beat the World" dance competition, but there's far more than money at stake for each group. The Detroit-based American squad, "Fusion," is led by Yuson (Tyrone Brown). He's trying to infuse free running into the routine to give his crew a leg up on the competition. Meanwhile, the Brazilian crew, "Revolution," is struggling to secure the funds it needs to even make it to America. Finally "The Flying Steps," a German dance crew, is itself in a state of turmoil. Crew leader Eric (Christian Loclair) is a three-time solo dance champ, but the group's voted him out of the position of lead choreographer and installed his ex-girlfrend Nina (Stephanie Nguyen). With trouble brewing and each crew leader on the hot seat, which will put it all together and win the Beat the World competition? Beat the World is distributed in Canada by Entertainment One.

High Chicago [Alfons Adetuyi, Canada, 2011] Set in 1975, High Chicago is a gritty drama about Sam (Colin Salmon), a 42-year-old husband and father of two, in the grip of a serious gambling addiction. Living on the edge of poverty in a northern mining town, Sam has been stoking the same blast furnace for ten years. When Sam loses his job; instead of admitting his failure to his wife Ruth (Karen LeBlanc), he chooses instead to chase the foolhardy dream of traveling to Africa to open a drive-in theater, a scheme hatched years earlier in the navy. Sam is equally desperate to support his family and keep his personal dream alive, almost destroying both with his compulsive gambling. High Chicago is distributed in Canada by Inner City Films.

1970’s. Small town, Northern Canada. For Adetuyi brothers, an 8mm camera and one inspiring arts teacher. Jack Smith not only gave the brothers full access to the school’s “production facilities”, he also ignited the brothers’ lifelong passion for film and television. This formative experience marked the beginning of an extraordinary creative collective. Today, the afros have long disappeared, but the creative flame burns strong. United under the Inner City Films banner, the Adetuyi brothers combine their individual talents and experience to produce unique, visionary stories for film and television.

Both films Beat the World and High Chicago will be screened in a back-to-back double bill. Following the film screenings the Adetuyi brothers will be welcomed into the theatre to host and in depth discussion and Q&A session. This event is sure to offer a unique experience to Cinéfest Sudbury patrons as we explore the brother’s styles and interpretations of filmmaking.

The 23rd edition of Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival runs September 17th – 25th, 2011.
